CHELSEA skipper Reece James says he has never once doubted striker Nicolas Jackson.

The Senegalese, 22, had struggled since a summer move from Villarreal but he bagged a hat-trick in the win over Tottenham.

Pundit Alan Shearer riled Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino last month by claiming Jackson was not a “natural goalscorer”.

And team-mate James said: “I don’t think he’s needed a pick-me-up once. “He is one of the most energetic guys.

“He knows his ability and why he is at Chelsea.

“As a striker, you go through spells when you don’t score or miss chances.

“He just has to keep working hard. That is what he’s done and he got his reward.

“I’m happy for him. It’s a huge confidence boost for anyone to get a hat-trick, especially against such a good side.”

Reigning champs Manchester City will be a very different proposition today to the nine men of Tottenham.

But Chelsea, who have drawn with Liverpool and Arsenal this season, will have renewed belief that things are at last starting to fall into place.

James said: “We know it’s going to be tough — City are an amazing side. “We need to prepare right and put in a good performance.

“Any result will show how well we have done.”

James has been left out of England’s latest squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia following a request from Chelsea.

The injury-hit right-back has only recently returned from a spell out with a hamstring problem.

He added: “That’s been one of the hardest things — trying to be a captain when I’m not available.

“It’s really helped coming back in and being fit and available again.”
