Early Life
Ricki-Lee Coulter was born Ricki-Lee Dawn Coulter on November 10, 1985, in Auckland, New Zealand. She is the daughter of model Loretta Sheerin, who was born in Tonga, and her parents split up before her birth. Loretta later married a man named John, and Rickie-Lee has two half-sisters, Emily and Jodie, from that marriage. When she was three months old, Coulter moved to Gold Coast, Queensland, with her mother. During her youth, her maternal grandfather, Rocky, was a father figure in Ricki-Lee's life. Loretta let Ricki-Lee visit her biological father in New Zealand as a child, and Coulter told "The Age" in 2012, "He wasn't a part of my life. I'd go over there and stay with him and his family, [but] it was just weird to me. Then when I got to an age where I could speak up to Mum, about six or seven, I said, 'I don't want to go; I don't like it.'" Ricki-Lee attended Southport State School, and in a 2008 interview with the "Herald Sun," she said of her classmates, "Their mums and dads were married. They had brothers and sisters. They had afternoon tea. They had a cooked dinner. I never had that. I'd get home from school and there was nothing in the cupboard. I would eat mouldy bread and drink water because that would fill me up." When she was in primary school, she played netball and touch football, and she participated in swimming.
Ricki-Lee attended Southport State High School, and when she was 15 years old, she injured her knee and had to undergo reconstructive surgery; she was told that she would no longer be able to play netball. A few months later, her mother heard her singing in her bedroom and realized that Coulter was a talented vocalist. Ricki-Lee began performing with live bands in the Brisbane and Gold Coast areas, and she learned to play numerous instruments, such as the flute, tenor saxophone, and trumpet, which she played with the school band. After she graduated from high school in 2002, Coulter started writing songs with her friend Xy Latu and began seriously focusing on a music career.
