Maurizio Sarri‘s side punched their ticket to the semi-finals thanks to Mattia Zaccagni’s winner in the 51st minute following a controversial VAR review that led to a penalty-kick.

Tensions then flared up with Lazio star Pedro being shown a second yellow card following a scuffle with former Roma team-mate Gianluca Mancini in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

The Giallorossi then lost Sardar Azmoun only four minutes later after a rough challenge on Nicolo Rovella.

Mancini became the final player to be shown a red card due to dissent, but that took place after the final whistle.

Referee Daniele Orsato had his hands full on the pitch but also had to deal with the benches.

And that led to yet another red card for Mourinho, who was fuming with VAR and the decision to award Lazio a spot-kick.

This comes after the ex-Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea boss was also sent off against Atalanta on Sunday.

The Biancocelesti were awarded a penalty after Roma’s Dean Huijsen appeared to have clipped Valentin Castellanos’s heel while they challenged for the ball inside the area.

Mourinho told Mediaset after the match: “It’s a modern football penalty, the sort that wouldn’t have been given before VAR.

“The referee didn’t give it when he was three metres away but with VAR he then gives it.”

Mourinho’s contract with Roma runs out in June and the Portuguese tactician has yet to agree a new deal.
