The pair traded misses as they struggled to find their best form in front of a perplexed Alexandra Palace crowd.

But the most incredible moment of the frame occurred when O’Sullivan came to the table and attempted to pot the pink.

Instead, he clipped the cue ball at the wrong angle and missed the pink altogether, handing Hawkins four points for a foul.

Much like those watching on, O’Sullivan could not believe the error as he bowed his head over the snooker table in disbelief.

Some costly misses from Hawkins did allow O’Sullivan back into the frame – which The Rocket won before he sealed a 6-3 victory.

But the shock foul remained the talking point as fans took to social media to react to the surprising mistake from one of the sport’s greatest ever players.

One said: “What the hell is O’Sullivan playing at?”

While another added: “Ronnie O’Sullivan just struck the ball like I do 🤣.”
