SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER’s caddie was forced to lie down by the side of a green at The Open after falling ill.

The golf superstar shot a second consecutive 70, for a tie of fourth going into the weekend, despite his pal Ted Scott’s struggles.

While the world No.1 was trying to chase down leader Shane Lowry, the ailing Scott had to take a break.

Concerned onlookers saw Scott having to lie down next to the ninth green as Scheffler and playing partners Jordan Spieth and Cameron Young putted.

After his round, Scheffler, 28, revealed that Scott was suffering from a problem with his stomach but was able to battle on.

He said: “He had a bit of food poisoning or some kind of stomach bug.

“He didn’t sleep much on Thursday night and we didn’t know if he was going to be able to go this morning but he fought it out.

“You saw him laying down quite a bit out there which was pretty funny.

“It was one of those deals. I’m used to him being in one position, standing there by the bag, and all of a sudden at No9, he was literally sitting on the tenth tee for 10 minutes while we were putting.

“‘I didn’t even see him which was a bit unusual but he’s a fighter.

“He battled through it and did a good job.”

Scheffler and his fellow Americans Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau have won the first three Majors this year.

Should one of them be able to win the Open then it would see the USA complete a remarkable clean sweep.

It would be the first time this has happened since 1982 when Tom Watson, Craig Slater and Raymond Floyd won the four majors.

Scheffler also spoke about his form after completing his round.

He added: “I feel like I am in a decent position.

“I would liked to have been leading but I’ve played two solid rounds and I’ll just continue to try to hit good shots and good putts out there.”
