SIR ALEX FERGUSON made Manchester United players follow a strict rule when they took a plane for away matches.

The former Red Devils boss, 82, is widely regarded as the greatest in history.

Fergie won 13 Premier League titles during a 27-year spell at Old Trafford.

He also lifted five FA Cups and two Champions Leagues during an incredible reign.

And former United goalkeeper Ben Foster has now revealed the incredible high standards that Sir Alex demanded from all his players.

The Scot ensured it was his way or the highway on all matters, ranging from on-field tactics to off-field conduct.

Fergie axed superstars like David Beckham, Roy Keane and Ruud van Nistelrooy for not toeing the party line.

But there was one strict rule that he was particularly adamant about.

Speaking on the Cycling GK podcast, Foster explained how Sir Alex made all his players wear suits while travelling to away matches.

Even journeying by plane, United stars were suited and booted in order to create an elite impression on their hosts.

Only when the jet had left the runway could players change into relaxing tracksuits for the journey.

But as their destination approached, Ferguson made them get back into their smart gear – with no top buttons undone.

Nowadays, Erik ten Hag oversees a more casual policy.

But former Fergie star Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought the rule back during his days in charge.

Retired ex-Wrexham star Foster said: “When I was at United, with Sir Alex Ferguson, that was the bare minimum.

“Hitting the standard was the bare minimum. I remember, if we would play away and we would fly, then we would get on the plane and you would get changed almost instantly.

“You arrive, you’re in your suit, you’ve got your tie on. Everything’s done. You don’t even dare not have your top button done up, tie to the top, perfect.

“You look immaculate. You’ve got your shoes on shined. The second you get on the plane, you would take your suit off, put it into its hanger and hang it up all nicely.”

Foster, who played 23 times for United under Fergie, continued: “Everybody is labelled up nicely.

“You would get into leisurewear – shorts, t-shirt and everything like that.

“It might be a three-hour flight, it might be a six-hour flight. Within half an hour of landing, it would be ‘Right lads, everybody back in your seats – get dressed again’.

“You get off the plane looking exactly the same as what you looked getting on it six hours previous.

“It would be, ‘Oh, Man United are in town’, and it carries so much weight.”
