Six Nations teams set for huge change in protocol that will be massive boost to fans watching on TV

EVERY Six Nations team will have players’ names on their backs for the first time when the tournament kicks off next month.

While England, Scotland and Italy put player names on their shirts last year, it was not a tournament requirement.

This year, though, in a bid to help fans and TV viewers in particular identify players, names will be carried on shirt backs for all 15 matches.

Final confirmation is due next week but the move has been backed by the various unions.

England and Scotland first adopted names during the 2022 Autumn internationals, retaining the practice for the Six Nations.

Until then, teams had only worn numbers but the move is seen as a useful tool for casual fans who might not know the players by sight.

The Six Nations gets underway on February 2 as France welcome holders Ireland to Paris.

Ireland were victorious at last year’s tournament and claimed a historic Grand Slam in the process.

Andy Farrell will be without fly-half and captain Jonny Sexton after he retired at the end of the Rugby World Cup.

England will be aiming to improve on last year’s Six Nations finish after they came 4th in the standings and claimed just two wins at the tournament.

Red Rose will be without captain Owen Farrell after he made himself unavailable in order to “prioritise his and his family’s mental wellbeing”.

England will be hoping to get off to a winning start as they face last year’s bottom side Italy, while Wales host Scotland.
