His first appearance as a regular member of the Sky Sports team will be on Sunday when Brentford face Tottenham and Chelsea host Liverpool.

Speaking about his new role, Sturridge told Sky media: “The Premier League season kicks off tonight and I am excited to be a part of it all with Sky Sports.

“I’m looking forward to using my experience on the pitch and bringing this insight to the fans watching at home.

“It is set to be an exciting season ahead and it’s great to be part of the Sky Sports team bringing you all the action.”

Sturridge made two appearances on Sky Sports earlier this year and impressed fans with his insight.

One person tweeted: “I’m all for Daniel Sturridge punditry mind. Quality.”

While another added: “Sturridge has been tops as a pundit.”

Although he is yet to officially retire from football, he has not played professionally in 14 months.

The striker was released from Perth Glory last June after making just six appearances.

Prior to his time in Australia, he spent over 18 months away from football following a one-season stint with Turkish side Trabzonspor.

Sturridge kicked off his professional playing career with Manchester City in 2007 and went on to make 32 first team appearances before joining Chelsea.

He spent four years with the Blues – one of which was spent on loan at Bolton – before leaving for Liverpool in 2013.

The striker then spent six years at Anfield and scored 68 goals in 160 appearances for the Reds.

Sturridge also spent six years as a regular name in the England team between 2011 and 2017.
