The Northern Irishman responded to his loss with a bizarre post on X by promoting a painting and decorating service, accompanied with a phone number.

But he later clarified that the digits in fact belonged to a social media troll and the upload was just payback.

Allen said: “The phone number from my previous tweet is from an account who decided to send me some abuse after today’s loss.

“I just thought I’d have a little fun at their expense. If you need any painting and decorating done I recommend someone you know.”

Wells took the opening two frames following a slow start from Allen.

The Players Championship winner got himself back level at 2-2 after a gruelling two hours and 20 minutes.

But Wells made back-to-back breaks of 63 and 78 to steal back his lead.

Allen responded with the only century break of the match, knocking in 103, but Wells replied with a 63 to produce the biggest shock of the tournament.
