Southampton vs Liverpool preview
It’s top vs bottom at St Mary’s on Sunday as Premier League leaders Liverpool clash with struggling Southampton.
Saints lie bottom of the division with four points from their opening 11 matches since returning to the top-tier of English football – four behind Ipswich Town outside of the relegation zone.
Russell Martin’s side did manage to clinch their first win since promotion against Everton on their last home outing, but followed that with their ninth defeat of the season in a six-pointer against Wolves.
It’s left Martin as favourite to be the next top-flight manager sacked, and that’s perhaps understandable given the run of fixtures that lay ahead.
Southampton’s next five games include: Liverpool, Brighton, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Tottenham.
The underlying stats also make grim reading with Saints ranking bottom for goals scored (7), fewest shots on target (32) and the second-highest xGC (expected goals conceded).
Liverpool will understandably arrive in high spirits, especially given they’ve won five of the last six meetings with Southampton by a scoreline of 18-6.
Arne Slot’s side have won four on the spin, and 12 of their last 13 since that shock defeat to Nottingham Forest at Anfield in September.
No side has collected more points on the road than Liverpool, who’ve taken 13 of a possible 15 in their five games, while nobody has conceded fewer away from home than Liverpool’s three.

Southampton vs Liverpool preview betting tips and predictions
Away days
Given the statistics written above, it’s very difficult to see Southampton coming away from this without a bloody nose. Liverpool have scored 2+ goals in 14 of their 17 competitive matches this season while only Spurs and Manchester City boast a higher xG (20.45).
Only Ipswich Town have a higher xCG than Southampton, who’ve made a league-high 15 defensive errors with six leading to goals this season. Liverpool should fill their boots.

Salah Salah
If Liverpool are going to fill their boots, it’s more than likely that Mohamed Salah will be the main beneficiary.
The Egyptian superstar, 32, has been outstanding this season, scoring 10 goals and providing 10 assists in 17 appearances in all competitions. He’s scored in four-consecutive Premier League games and has seven goals in 11 meetings against Southampton.
