Stand-in Gary Chambers admits asking Warrington stars how they want to play

For the stand-in boss has turned to the Wolves’ stars for ideas of how they should play.

The head of youth has stepped up after Daryl Powell was axed following the 42-6 humiliation at Wakefield.

And as they try to avoid a not so magnificent seven defeats in a row, senior stars have had their input on what should happen on the field.

Former player Chambers said: “I had meetings with individuals on Tuesday, more to get my ethos over to our senior team. It was me asking them how they want to play.

“They’re the leaders in this group. You’ve got Josh Drinkwater, George Williams and others of that ilk. I’m not going to tell them how to play.

“This is their ship. They sail it, so they come up with the gameplan. All I have to do is find the clips and the extracts from games to prove that would work.

“It’s not about what they do from the head down, it’s a case if getting the message and plan, which is ultra-simplistic, across in the head – they’re more than skilful enough to execute it.”

Chambers was likely to hold the fort until former St Helens coach Justin Holbrook was handed the job – until the Aussie turned down an offer.

And even if he goes on a run of victories, there is little chance of him wanting it.

He added: “I love coaching and what I haven’t done for the past couple of years is the hands-on stuff but the attention to detail stuff comes from what I spend my time teaching.

“But I don’t know enough to take it on full-time and there are better people than me to lead the club.

“It’s just a case of if and when things come to fruition, I’ll move to one side.”
