ERIK TEN HAG has been warned he may soon “be booking his flight home” as Manchester United prepare to make Dan Ashworth their new sporting director.

The Red Devils are braced for change following Sir Jim Ractliffe’s minority takeover.

And moves have already been made behind the scenes, with Omar Berrada joining as CEO from Manchester City.

Ratcliffe is now looking to appoint Newcastle chief Ashworth as his sporting director.

The Toon man’s job would be to overhaul United’s decaying squad and setting up a side capable of fighting for the title.

However, the role could bring Ashworth into conflict with Ten Hag.

The Dutchman has steered his own course at Old Trafford so far, spending millions on hand-picked targets like Andre Onana and Mason Mount.

And former Liverpool hero Kenny Dalglish reckons Ten Hag, already under pressure due to inconsistent results, could walk if he is not consulted properly over Ashworth’s role at United.

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy podcast, Dalglish said if he was Ten Hag, he’d be “booking his flight home” if Ratcliffe fails to get his views on Ashworth’s appointment.

And Dalglish also reckons the Newcastle chief’s arrival could cause “internal strife”, signalling at the end of Ten Hag’s Old Trafford reign.

He explained: “Clubs go about the sporting director situation in different wayy. Sometimes they bring them in before they bring in a manager, but that is not for me. I would do things the other way round.

“Just look at what is happening at Manchester United. They’re bringing a sporting director in now and I wonder whether they’ve actually consulted with Erik ten Hag. Is he really happy to work with him?

“If I was Ten Hag and they’d brought in a sporting director that I wasn’t happy with, I’d be booking my flight home.

“If the sporting director interferes too much and starts trying to do everyone else’s job as well as his own then you won’t be successful. That’s when you get internal strife.

“I hope he (Ratcliffe) is patient because it’ll take him a while to get to where the teams are that he mentioned and the standing they’ve got in football.

“I think it will take him a while to get there because it doesn’t happen overnight.”
