MILOS RAONIC’S wife was in tears after her husband retired from his first round match at the Australian Open.

Raonic, 33, has long relied on his physicality to battle his way to victories but injury got the better of him once again at the Rod Laver arena.

The Canadian – who lost the 2016 Wimbledon final to Andy Murray – pushed home-hero opponent Alex De Minaur hard in the opening two sets after winning the first but was ultimately forced to retire.

Raonic’s wife Camille Ringoir was seen crying in the crowd as many speculated whether this might be the last time we see the big man on a major court.

Injuries have been a constant in Raonic’s career, with him undergoing surgery four times to repair injuries to his hip, both feet and his wrist.

A torn Achilles two years ago was seen as so bad that surgery would not even help – so a long period of rest was prescribed instead.

Tennis legend John McEnroe said on commentary said: “It’s tough to see any player walk out this way.

“It’s also sad because I don’t know if we will ever see him here again. I’m not sure how much longer he will be able to keep playing, honestly.”

After the game, De Minaur said he was disappointed to see the game end in a retirement for his opponent.

The Aussie said: “First of all, I hope he has a speedy recovery.

“[It’s] not great to see him like this. He deserves to be healthy and playing incredible tennis that he has done for so many years. Hopefully he is back in no time.

“As you saw I was chasing his serve for the better part of that match. Guessing every now and again. Ended up getting maybe a little bit unlucky to not win the first set, got a little bit tight at the end.

“I just focused on myself, second set, told myself restart and managed to jag a break out of the blue and and that changed the momentum.”
