Moments after playing a behind the back shot, Altmaier suffered a sickening fall while trying to retrieve Fery’s smash.
He yelled out in pain, with medical staff immediately called on to help him and the BBC’s commentator claiming “that looked awful”.
Following an initial dialogue with the physio, Altmaier gingerly got back to his feet and limped over to his chair.
He then received an official medical timeout, during which he appeared to have his hip thoroughly worked over.
Thankfully he was able to continue, and remarkably broke Fery back to draw level at 4-4 just moments later.
The Brit, 21, immediately regained his break advantage, however, before serving out the first set 6-4.
Amazingly, Altmaier managed to shrug off his fall to book a place in the second round.
