The best XI of free agents still unemployed after January transfer window including David de Gea & Man Utd legend

THE January transfer window might be closed but there are still a host of players that can be snapped up.

The mid-season window was far quieter than usual as many clubs were hamstrung by Financial Fair Play regulations.

And with Everton being made an example of with their 10-point deduction, very few sides were willing to take a risk in the market.

As a result, free agents could be looked at as logical in the coming months as clubs tighten their purse strings.

And there are some familiar names available – including Premier League and Champions League winners.

Former Manchester United keeper David de Gea has been a free agent since leaving Old Trafford last summer.

He has been linked with a host of clubs, most recently Nottingham Forest at the end of the January window, but remains unattached.

Ex-Tottenham defender Danny Rose has been without a club since his Watford contract was terminated in 2022, although he has hinted he would like to play in Spain.

Former Arsenal centre-back Shkodran Mustafi left Levante last year, while ex-Liverpool man Mamadou Sakho has been unattached since departing Montpellier in November.

Matty Longstaff, brother of Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff, is searching for a club after leaving St James’ Park.

The expiration of Josh Onomah’s Preston deal means the ex-Tottenham midfielder is another star on the market, along with former Olympiacos man Yann M’Vila.

Anwar El Ghazi may have played for Ajax, Aston Villa, Everton and PSV, but he is now out in the cold without a team.

Former Chelsea and Manchester United forward Juan Mata is available after leaving Vissel Kobe.

The Spaniard, 35, left the Japanese side in January after clinching the J1 League title.

Like Mata, Newcastle cult hero Hatem Ben Arfa, 36, is also looking for a club and has been a free agent since leaving Lille in 2022.

And Diego Costa, who won two Premier League titles with Chelsea, is available after leaving Brazilian side Botafogo.
