Todd Boehly accused of offering to overspend on Chelsea transfer in order to avoid paying ‘unlucky’ amount

CHELSEA owner Todd Boehly’s transfer spending has come into question since his Blues takeover – but there could be a method to the madness.

The American billionaire has splashed over £1BILLION on players since buying the club from Roman Abramovich in 2022.

Boehly forked out almost £220m this summer with nearly half of that spent on Pedro Neto (£54m) and Joao Felix (£46.3m).

But the investment tycoon has a superstitious way with numbers.

According to ESPN, an agent was in the middle of securing a £12m transfer for his client when Boehly looked to swoop in.

He enquired about the fee for the player and shortly afterwards contacted the agent again to offer £14m.

The agent asked why they would not just go to £13m – the logical increase.

But Boehly told him he, like many, believes the number 13 is unlucky.

The Yank businessman has gone through SIX managers already in just two seasons in charge.

Enzo Maresca – a former assistant to Pep Guardiola who last year won the Championship with Leicester – replaced Mauricio Pochettino this summer.

Madueke told talkSPORT: “Of course what you guys see on the outside is slightly exaggerated. Of course, in the building, it’s a great place to be, to be around.

“But of course there’s a lot of things going on with all the signings, the turnover and stuff. But as a football player your job is to perform on the pitch.

“You can’t be looking at all the outside stuff, you have to zone in, try and play your best football when you’re called upon. That’s what I try and do.”
