This is precisely the case with some of the top stars participating in Afcon.

Familiar names such as Mohamed Salah, Riyad Mahrez, Sadio Mane and Victor Osimhen all have mega contracts at their respective clubs.

But where do they rank among their peers.

Using data from bettors, the top 10 have now been revealed.

Kicking off the list from the bottom is former Chelsea and Senegal goalkeeper Eduoard Mendy, who earns £181,000 a week at Al-Ahli.

Athletic Bilbao and Ghana forward Inaki Williams ranks ninth on a £187,000 a week contract.

Sought-after Napoli and Nigeria striker Osimhen ranks in eighth with £211,000 a week.

Ah-Ahli star Franck Kessie has starred for host nation Ivory Coast at the tournament and comes in seventh in the list with a £230,000-a-week deal.

Next up is Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi, who missed a penalty as Morocco crashed out of Afcon in the last 16, with a weekly wage of £240,000.

Ivorian forward Seko Fofana, who stars alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, pips Hakimi into the top five with a wage of £250,000.

Liverpool and Egypt icon Salah comes in next with a wage of £350,000.

He is surprisingly nowhere near the top three, with Chelsea flop and Senegal star Kalidou Koulibaly raking in £570,000 a week at Al-Hilal.

Senegal star Mane then comes in second place with a £657,000 weekly wage at Saudi Pro League team Al-Nassr.

Topping the list is Algeria captain Mahrez, with the former Manchester City and Leicester star earning £860,000-a-week with Al-Ahli.
