A poignant tribute from his wife Paige, posted with a photo of the couple sharing a kiss at their wedding, said: “I will always love you, forever my best friend.”

Just days earlier, she had taken to Facebook to speak of her excitement over her pregnancy and had hosted a baby shower earlier this month.

A tribute from Liam’s club added: “It is with great sadness we share with you the passing of Liam Canning.

“Liam passed away on Wednesday. Liam truly was one of a kind and was such a positive addition to Rossendale Rugby Club.

“Liam’s high energy and positive spirit was loved and appreciated on and off the pitch.

“We pass on our sincerest condolences to Liam’s wife, Paige, children and family.”

Another friend said: “Beyond gutted to hear the news of Liam Canning’s passing, truly one of the nicest blokes I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting.

“Taught me more about life than I could ever wish to know.”

Another wrote: “With my condolences, empathy and sincere sadness, along with seeing a great community stand together once again with heavy sadness.

“My heart, well wishes and prayers go out to Liams children, Wife, family, and friends sincerely..

“Witnessing all I’m seeing and hearing, a great gentle giant has been taken too soon.”

Liam also played for Sedgely Park, Blackburn, Waterloo and Burnley & Pendle during his rugby career.

He had also undertaken a great deal of charity work, having previously provided blankets, pillows and hot food and beverages to the homeless.

Liam also helped hold a fundraising event in aid of ELHT&Me in August 2022 – helping to fund state-of-the-art medical equipment for local NHS hospitals and critical research.
