Tributes to Stevenage fan, 19, killed in car crash on way home from game

TRIBUTES have poured in after a Stevenage football fan, 19, died in a horror car crash on Saturday.

Ollie Gatfield was tragically killed while travelling home towards Stevenage from a game, while another male in the car remains in a coma.

It is understood the white Volkswagen Polo left the road and hit a tree on the A602 Park Way, near the junction with Charlton Road shortly before 8.40pm.

Cops confirmed the teen sadly died at the scene and next of kin have been informed while being supported by specially trained officers.

A statement from StevenageFC read: “Stevenage Football Club is deeply saddened to learn the passing of 19-year-old supporter Ollie Gatfield on Saturday.

“A dedicated member of the East Terrace, Ollie followed Stevenage home and away and attended the weekend’s win at Shrewsbury Town.

“He was involved in a tragic car accident on the way home from the game along with another Stevenage fan, who remains in a coma at hospital. 

“The thoughts of everyone connected to Stevenage are with Ollie’s family and loved ones at this incredibly sad time.

“As a tribute to Ollie’s life, we are asking both Stevenage and Barnsley supporters to join in with a minute’s applause before the game.” 

Emotional tributes have poured in as the saddened community joins together.

One note read: “Rest easy, you deserve the world.”

Herts Police confirmed: “A man sadly passed away at the scene.

“His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers, while a second man has been taken to hospital.”

If anyone has any information about the accident Herts Police are urging they call the non-emergency number 101, quoting ISR 670 of 13 January, 2024.

Sergeant Nicholas Kane, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit added: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this extremely difficult time.

“We are currently working to establish the circumstances around what happened and are appealing to the public for their assistance.
