Turkish court orders Istanbul mayor jailed pending trial

A Turkish court on Sunday formally placed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu under arrest pending trial on corruption charges days after his detention triggered mass protests in the country.

The mayor is one of 100 people being investigated on corruption charges, and is also being probed in a second case on “terror-related” allegations.

The mayor, a key opposition figure and potential challenger to longtime President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was detained on Wednesday by the government for alleged corruption and “terrorism”.
