The USA are looking for a new manager after sacking Gregg Berhalter following their shock group stage exit in the Copa America.

Berhalter was let go this week after his side lost two of their three group games in the tournament, despite playing host to the competition.

The US are said to have made initial contacts with Klopp about taking charge of the team going forward.

The United States are preparing to host the 2026 World Cup, alongside Canada and Mexico, and will be wanting to impress on home soil.

Klopp is currently without a job after calling time on his nine-year spell as Liverpool manager.

And it understood he has also turned down the chance to manage to US national team.

During his stint on Merseyside the German won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.

But he has been adamant that he is taking some time away from management for a while after carrying the stress that comes with being the man in charge at Anfield.

When announcing his Liverpool departure, he said: “Will I ever work again? Of course, I know myself, I cannot just sit around. I will find something else maybe to do.

“But I will not manage a club or a country at least for a year, that’s not possible, I cannot do that and I don’t want to.”

Klopp’s desire to take some time out could put a spanner in the works for the US.

But former USA international and Everton shot-stopper Tim Howard has already pleaded with the national side to do everything they can to bring in former Borussia Dortmund gaffer.

In an article with the Daily Mail, he wrote: “If I was in charge of US Soccer right now, I’d be on my way to the airport.

“Why? Because I believe I could make a very compelling argument to Jurgen Klopp to take over the US Men’s National Team.

“After the disappointment of Copa America, after the United States lost to Uruguay and exited at the group stages, I will personally fly to Spain. I mean it.

“I know Klopp has only been retired a few weeks and I know he wants a break. But if we sat around his villa in Spain, I think I could lure him over here. 100 per cent.

“The money is certainly there. So my pitch would be simple: he has a young group of players who can play progressive, front-foot soccer – exactly like his Liverpool teams.

“And in two years’ time he can go to the biggest World Cup in history.”
