Early Years

Valentin Aleksandrovich Chmerkovskiy was born on March 24, 1986, in Odesa, Ukraine, the son of Aleksandr and Larisa Chmerkovskiy. His mother was an engineer and his father was in the merchant marines. He and his close-knit family moved to the United States in 1994 after rampant anti-Semitism in their native land caused his parents to opt for a better life for their children. As a Jewish immigrant, Valentin was desperate to fit into the new culture surrounding him. Two years after his arrival, his older brother Maksim and their father opened a dance studio for young people in New Jersey. Valentin began taking dance lessons, determined to become a premier dancer. He was 16 years old when he partnered with 15-year-old Diana Olonetskaya to become the first American dance team to win the World Junior Championship. He went on to win the World Latin Dance Championship two times and the United States National Latin Dance Champion 14 times.

Writing

In his 2018 memoir "I'll Never Change My Name: An Immigrant's American Dream from Ukraine to the USA to Dancing with the Stars," Valentine Chmerkovskiy gives fans a direct look into the failures and successes that have shaped his life and given motion to his rise to fame.
