LIVERPOOL captain Virgil van Dijk broke an all-time record during his 250th appearance with the club.

Van Dijk, 32, led the Reds to a dominant 4-1 Premier League win at Brentford thanks to goals by Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and the returning Mohamed Salah.

The centre-back made history at the Gtech Community Stadium as he picked up the most wins in his first 250 games with the Merseysiders.

The Netherlands international celebrated his 171st victory across all competitions, all of which took place under current manager Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp signed the ex-Southampton star in 2018 following a staggering £75million deal.

Van Dijk overtakes team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold, who registered 168 wins in that same period.

The top 10 is completed by Liverpool legends Alisson (164), Sadio Mane(163), Andy Robertson (163), Salah(162), Alan Kennedy (160), Steve McMahon (155), Ian Rush (153) and Georginio Wijnaldum (151).

However, Wijnaldum only made it to 237 appearances before his departure for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.

The Dutchman, though, admitted he was completely oblivious to all this as he was so focused on the tricky trip at Brentford he didn’t even realise he was making his 250th appearance for Liverpool.

Van Dijk told TNT Sports: “I had no clue I was playing my 250th game for Liverpool, but it ‘s a proud moment, a proud moment for me and my family. On to many more.

“Today was a tough game for many reasons, even before all the injuries during the game, it was always going to be tough. We didn’t win here the last two times.

“They make it difficult for you, with the way they don’t give up, their set pieces, their directness. We had to be ready to fight.

“Obviously with the goals we scored, that helps massively as well.”
