Rooney, 38, scored a record 253 goals for the Red Devils in his 559 games in all competitions.

He joined the club in 2004 from Everton and then rejoined the Toffees in 2017.

Rooney then had stints with DC United and Derby County before calling it a day.

However, he admitted that he would have liked to wear the famous green and white hoops of Celtic before the legends match against Man United.

He told Celtic’s club media: “Celtic has always been a team I have followed and wanted to win.

“Unfortunately, I did not get the opportunity to play for Celtic. I would have liked too.

“But it did not work out and I did not get that chance.”

Despite never playing for any Scottish side, Rooney did face Celtic in the Champions League.

Rooney even scored against Celtic in the 3-0 win at Old Trafford in 2008.

He added: “They were always special games. All the Celtic fans travel in their numbers.

“Going there to Celtic and experiencing the atmosphere there and the Champions League nights at Celtic was special.

“It is always special playing with Celtic.”

After retiring from playing, Rooney has gone into club management.

He has taken charge of Derby, DC United, Birmingham City and is now the boss at Plymouth Argyle.
