Rooney joined Jill Scott, Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Ian Wright on the Stick to Football podcast with Sky Bet.

The former England man was announced as a permanent member of the panel in April.

But he will not be in the job for long as he is now in charge of Championship side Plymouth.

Rooney said: “I used to hate pre-season. I’d come back every pre-season six to seven pounds overweight. So I knew I had to put the work in.”

Wright asked if Rooney did any training to keep fit at all, to which the England legend said no and Wright replied: “Wow Wayne.”

After Neville revealed he did some exercise to tide him over during the summer, Rooney then revealed the extreme lengths he went to to ‘make weight’ after coming back for pre-season.

The Plymouth manager said: “I used to take the [exercise] bike in the steam room the day before we were back in.

“Honestly the night before we had to get weighed I’d sit in there for 90 minutes fully clothed.

“I wouldn’t eat a thing, I wouldn’t drink a thing.”

Rooney said his preparations to be match sharp would only begin when he was actually back in training, which Keane agreed with.

That’s in comparison to athletes now who often train alongside their holidays.

But Rooney dismissed athletes posting clips of them working out while on holiday as “For PR.”

On bleep tests, Rooney said: “I used to drop out early all the time. Because next time you do it, you need to do better! As soon as the keepers came out, I was out.”

Keane replied: “I like your tactics!”
