WAYNE ROONEY snubbed Cristiano Ronaldo as he was asked to name his best Manchester United team-mate – and he produced a surprise when giving his worst.

The Red Devils and England legend, 38, is back on these shores after being appointed Birmingham City boss last month.

And he was celebrating on Saturday after he finally secured his first point in charge of the Championship side after suffering three straight defeats.

Rooney burst on to the scene as a 16-year-old with Everton before moving to Old Trafford in 2004.

He went on to become United and England’s all-time top scorers, the latter record now being surpassed by Harry Kane, as he won every honour available under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Rooney returned to Everton for a season in 2017 before finishing his playing days with spells in America at DC United and then with Derby County before embarking on his coaching career.

This week he appeared on a new podcast hosted by rugby league legend Rob Burrow named ‘Seven: Rob Burrow’ – a seven-part BBC series where the ex-Leeds Rhino ace asks a range of sporting icons seven questions.

One of those asked by Burrows was who were Rooney’s best and worst team-mates during his career – and both were ex-United colleagues.

“Best team-mate, I’d probably say Darren Fletcher,” declared Rooney.

The former Scottish international midfielder, who is currently the technical director at United, was part of the squad alongside Rooney until he departed in 2015 for West Brom.

He finished his career at Stoke City before hanging up his boots in 2019.

Rooney then added: “My worst team-mate, there are a lot more than you’d probably think!

“On the pitch, the toughest one was Nani. He was frustrating to play with.”

Portuguese international winger Nani, 36, is still playing for Turkish club Adana Demirspor.

He spent eight years at United after joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2015 and won four Premier League titles plus the Champions League during that period amongst a host of other honours.
