Cole, 40, was a big name in the top flight after turning out for Chelsea and West Ham.

The hitman, who also had Premier League loans at Charlton and Aston Villa, scored 86 goals in 397 club appearances.

And he also won seven caps for England under Fabio Capello, with six of those coming in 2009.

Cole, who retired from football in March 2018, never scored for the Three Lions.

But his teammates appeared keen to lend a hand with an elaborate prank at one training camp.

Cole revealed on the Footballer’s Guide to Football podcast that ex-England skipper Rooney, plus teammates Jermain Defoe and Shaun Wright-Phillips, once slipped him a Viagra.

The tablet was mixed in with his regular pile of vitamins.

And Cole ended up having to train with an uncomfortable addition down below.

However, he reckons he still put in the best performance that day.

Cole said: “The stonker was there. I wasn’t sexually aroused but it was just there.

“I was the quickest person around that pitch – I had three legs.”

Defoe, who was also on the podcast, noted: “Carlton was always smiley, happy and that, so we thought, if you are going to get anyone, who would take it?

“He just took it because he was thinking ‘oh yeah, vitamins, good for my body’.

“I was in stitches, it was the funniest thing. When we told him after… his face!”

Cole responded: “I had erased that from my memory – you’re bringing back bad memories.”
