David Moyes has so far been unable to make any additions to his squad as the Hammers struggle in the transfer market.

He has reportedly clashed with new technical director Tim Steidten over targets, with the club even posting an advert for new players.

However, The Athletic now report that West Ham have reached a verbal agreement with Ajax for the signing of Alvarez.

The deal is worth £32million including add-ons and also includes a sell-on clause.

Alvarez will travel to England to sign a five-year deal and undergo a medical once the offer has been finalised.

He is understood to have agreed personal terms with the Hammers over the weekend.

The 25-year-old is seen as a replacement for Rice, who was sold to Arsenal for £105million earlier in the window.

Alvarez is predominantly a holding midfielder but can also play at in central defence.
