Who is Slovenian national anthem lyricist?

The lyrics of the Slovenian national anthem are based on a poem called ‘Zdravljica’ that was written by 19th-century Slovenian poet France Prešeren.

Inspired by the French Revolution, France Prešeren wanted to capture the essence of liberty and equality in his poem that would go on to be Slovenia’s national anthem.

When was the Slovenian national anthem adopted?

It wasn’t until Slovenia gained their independence in 1991 that the ‘Zdravljica’ was officially declared as the national anthem.

Before then, from 1860 Slovenia’s national anthem was the ‘Naprej, zastava slave’ which translates to ‘Forward, Flag of Glory.’

The original anthem was the first ever piece of Slovene text to be translated into English.
