The former Manchester United boss has been an owner of racehorses for a long time and plenty of them have been successful.

At Cheltenham earlier this year he had half a dozen horses running at Prestbury Park.

This weekend at Aintree he will be hoping to see a big winner in the main event – but none of them will be his.

Does Sir Alex Ferguson have a horse in the Grand National?

The legendary ex-coach will NOT have any horses running in the Grand National this weekend.

He will, however, have a horse running in one of the races before the main attraction.

The Mersey Novices’ Hurdle will get underway at 1.55pm BST on Saturday, April 13.

Ferguson will have Caldwell Potter hoping to scoop a big prize, having spent £630,000 on the horse last year.

Should Caldwell Potter win, and he is a favourite, he will land Ferguson £100,000.

Ferguson has already had two winners earlier this year at Cheltenham, and he’ll be praying Cadlwell Potter can complete the hat-trick.

The horse is trained by Paul Nicholls, who has spoken highly of Ferguson’s runner.

He told Sun Racing: “He has acclimatised really well, it does take horses a little while to settle in and no matter what happens at Aintree I think he will be a better horse next year when he has had a summer at grass and we’ve got used to him and he is used to us.

“I think the two-and-a-half mile race at Aintree will be absolutely perfect for him, but I think he will make a lovely chaser next year.”
