FORMER Wales and British and Irish Lions full-back JPR Williams has sadly died.

The rugby hero – who won 55 Wales caps – passed away aged 74.

What was JPR Williams’s cause of death?

On January 8, 2023, it was revealed rugby icon JPR Williams had passed away from bacterial meningitis.

A statement from the his family said: “JPR died peacefully today at the University Hospital of Wales surrounded by his loving wife and four children, after a short illness, bravely battling bacterial meningitis.

“The family request privacy at this difficult time.”

The said news was also announced by Bridgend Ravens – formerly known as Bridgend – a club that Williams served as a player and club president.

“Bridgend Ravens are devastated to announce the passing of JPR Williams,” the club said in a statement on their website.

“An icon of the world game, John Peter Rhys Williams served Bridgend Ravens as a player and most recently as club president.

“He was capped 55 times for Wales and made eight Test appearances for the British and Irish Lions.

“Highlights of his illustrious career included winning two Schweppes Cup titles with Bridgend in 1979 and 1980, and three (Five Nations) Grand Slams in 1971, 1976 and 1978 for Wales.

“Following his retirement from the game, JPR became a key figure of the club’s administrative team, serving as Bridgend Ravens club president – a role he held until his passing.

“JPR’s passing leaves a huge void at the club, and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this sad time.”

Jonathan Davies thanked JPR “for the memories” in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The British and Irish Lions account posted: “One of the greatest ever Lions. A man who inspired so many.

“It is with huge sadness to learn that JPR Williams has passed away at the age of 74.

“All our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in Peace.”

Who did JPR Williams play for?

John Peter Rhys Williams became known as JPR after another John Williams, JJ, was regarded as one of rugby union‘s finest players.

He played for teams like the Bridgend Ravens, and Tondu.

Williams made his Wales debut in 1973.

The full-back, who played 55 times for his country and also made eight Test appearances for the British & Irish Lions, was a pivotal member of the Welsh team which won three Five Nations grand slams in eight seasons between 1971 and 1978.

He was known for being a fearless player, who had an aggressive and attacking style.

When did JPR Williams retire?

In 1980, Williams decided to switch careers and study medicine.

He retired from international rugby in 1981 to concentrate on his job as a surgeon.

Williams also represented several cricket teams, particularly the Lord’s Taverners team, between 1976 and 2004
