Who is Ruben Amorim?

Ruben Amorim is a Portuguese professional football manager and former player.

He was born on January 27, 1985.

As a footballer, he played mainly as a midfielder, although he had times when he was deployed as a right-back or winger.

The 39-year-old dedicated most of his professional career to Belenenses and Benfica.

He joined Benfica in 2008 and went on to secure ten major titles during his tenure.

He represented Portugal in two FIFA World Cups which earned him a total of 14 caps.

In 2017, he retired as a player and began his coaching career at Casa Pia the following year.

He was then appointed as head coach at Braga B before taking charge of the first team in December 2019.

Ruben is currently the manager of Sporting CP, a team in the Primeira Liga until the end of the 2024 season. 

He has reportedly agreed to become Liverpool’s next manager when Jurgen Klopp steps down at the end of the season.

According to Sky Germany, he has agreed a deal in principle to take over next season.

However, he refused to guarantee that he would still be at Sporting ahead of their 2-1 win over Benfica on Saturday.

“No, I can’t guarantee [I’ll stay]. I gave my word and I can’t go back on it. If we don’t win titles, I’ll leave Sporting. It was clear from the start, it was the bet I passed on to the players. We have to win titles,” he said.
