THE Welsh Open is BACK – and many of the world’s best snooker players are in action.
Last year, Robert Milkins beat Shaun Murphy 9-7 to claim the second tournament win of his career.
World No1 Ronnie O’Sullivan was knocked out at the quarter-final stage by Tian Pengfei at the 2023 Welsh Open.
But why won’t The Rocket be in action at this year’s tournament?
Why is Ronnie O’Sullivan not playing in the Welsh Open?
Ronnie O’Sullivan will not compete in the 2024 Welsh Open due to “stage fright”.
The World No1 officially withdrew from the tournament on February 10th.
O’Sullivan was scheduled to face Liam Graham in a pre-qualifying match on February 12th.
A statement from Rocket read: “Morning guys, I wanted to let you know that I’ve decided I’m not able to play in Llandudno next week.
“It’s hard to explain but for years I’ve suffered from stage fright at times, brought on by anxiety.
“It’s not something I can predict or control but I try to manage it as best as I can.
“I’m sorry to everyone who’s bought tickets but I just can’t get my cue out when I feel like this and I think this [is] what’s best for me right now.
“I still want to be around the tournament so I’ll be doing some work with Eurosport and I hope to see you all there.”
O’Sullivan has been in fantastic form in 2024 so far, winning the Masters and World Grand Prix.
Rocket is looking to complete snooker‘s Triple Crown when the World Championship begins in April.
When is the Welsh Open 2024?
- The Welsh Open will begin on Monday, February 12 and conclude on Sunday, February 18.
- The tournament will be held at Venue Cymru in Llandudno, marking just the second time the competition hasn’t been held in Cardiff or Newport.
