But in a shock revelation, Van Gerwen admitted he was not one of the viewers.

The Dutchman was the favourite to get his hands on the Sid Waddell Trophy but crashed out to underdog Scott Williams in the quarter-final.

And speaking ahead of the tournament, MVG admitted he wouldn’t tune in for the final if he didn’t make it.

The 34-year-old claimed watching darts is “boring” and he would rather turn on his games console.

Asked on JaackMaate’s Happy Hour podcast if it’s because of the pain of not making the final himself, Van Gerwen said: “No chance. No, I never do.

“If someone else from Holland would be in it I probably can watch a bit, not all the game, I watch some.

“I’m not going to sit in front of the telly and watch – no chance.

“It’s boring. In the mean time, I can practice myself and try to get better. Next year there is another final.

“I don’t really like watching it, it’s not that I can’t watch, it’s I rather not.

“I have a lot of other things to do before I’m going to watch darts.

“I’d rather play Call of Duty on my PlayStation, plays with the kids, go fishing.”

Van Gerwen is a three-time winner of the World Champs and was runner-up last year as he lost the final to Michael Smith.

He has a daughter Zoe, 6, and a son Mike, 3, with girlfriend Daphne Govers.
