MARCEL SABITZER is set to complete a SHOCK transfer – just days after netting five for Bayern Munich in a brutal friendly.

Manchester United were unwilling to match the 29-year-old’s £25million price tag after his 18-game loan spell, during which he provided only three goals and one assist.

In addition to the Austrian’s underwhelming displays, the signing of Mason Mount left little room in Erik ten Hag’s squad for Sabitzer.

Despite the midfielder’s low-key loan, Man United manager Ten Hag insists that Sabitzer had a “fantastic” impact on the club.

The outstanding moment in Sabitzer’s short spell at Old Trafford was his two-goal performance against Sevilla in the Europa League.

The loanee struggled with injury throughout his spell in England before returning to his parent club in the summer.

However, in his return to football on Tuesday he cut an unrecognisable figure as he burst into life, contributing five goals to Bayern’s bizarre 27-0 victory.

Thomas Tuchel’s side battered local minnows FC Rottach-Egern as they kicked off their pre-season campaign.

A controversial move could now be on the cards for Sabitzer, with Bild reporting that Bayern’s close rivals and title challengers Borussia Dortmund are showing large interest in the player.

Dortmund chiefs believe that this move could help in finally bringing the Bundesliga title back to the club for the first time since 2012.

This comes after they devastatingly lost out on goal difference on the last day of last season to Bayern.

Having just sold young superstar Jude Bellingham in a lucrative deal to Real Madrid, Dortmund are looking for a number of new players to fit into their well oiled system, and they believe that a player from behind enemy lines may be just what they need.

Sabitzer joined Bayern in the summer of 2021 from RB Leipzig in a deal worth around £14m.

He has made 54 appearances for the perennial Bundesliga champions – scoring two goals and laying on a further pair of assists.
