The patrons at Augusta are unbelievably supportive and mild mannered. You can’t find a more pleasant environment to play golf in. The fact ZJ said this proves he’s softer than baby poop. Such a bad look. pic.twitter.com/a5YDgQMPRA

Johnson faced a challenging week at Augusta National after hitting a three-over-par 75 in the second round, bringing his total to seven-over for the tournament.

His biggest setback occurred at the par-three 12th on Friday, where the windy conditions intensified the difficulty of the Georgia course.

The 2007 Masters winner watched his initial tee shot at the par-three veer left into the bushes. His subsequent shot also missed its mark, landing well to the right of the green.

He then chipped onto the green before two-putting for a triple bogey.

And in response, the former United States Ryder Cup skipper was heard shouting “f*** off'” which made the commentator gasp and fans suggested it was yelled at the patrons watching the action.

Supporters at Augusta National appeared to react sarcastically when Johnson finally holed it.

One fan said: “Zach Johnson legitimately told the Masters patrons to f*** off after a triple on 12. You can hear it as clear as day here.”

While another added: “The patrons at Augusta are unbelievably supportive and mild-mannered.

“You can’t find a more pleasant environment to play golf in. The fact ZJ said this proves he’s softer than baby poop. Such a bad look.”

Afterwards, Johnson was asked about the foul-mouthed rant and denied saying anything to patrons.

Johnson said: “That’s laughable. That’s completely laughable.

“I can’t hear the patrons, number one. Number two, I just made a triple-bogey on the 12th hole that evidently is going to make me miss the cut.

“Which at the time I knew was pretty sensitive in the sense that I needed to keep making pars.

“If I’ve said anything, which I’m not going to deny, especially if it’s on camera, one, I apologise.

“And two, it was fully directed towards myself entirely because I can’t hear anything behind me. Does that make sense?”

It has not been an easy time for Johnson after captaining Team USA to a crushing Ryder Cup defeat against Team Europe last year.

His score of +7 meant he also missed the cut at the Masters.
